Scandinavia’s Biggest LGBT Gathering – Stockholm Pride Week

by Cornelia

Stockholm Pride is the largest Pride Festival in Scandinavia – that takes place from July 25th to July 31st. Here is more background on the festival whose parade alone attracts over 45,000 attendees.

The festival started in 1998 and works to make LGBT issues visible and create a free zone for gay, bi, transgender and queer people and gender expression contained within the LGBT social movements. It makes sense that the enormous Stockholm Pride event would be held in Sweden – they have been regarded as one of the most progressive in Europe and the rest of the world on LGBT issues.

Pride Parade

We can’t forget the Pride Parade! It takes place on Saturday July 30th starting at 13.00 (1pm). This year it starts at Kungsholmstorg and ends at Östermalms. It is 4.3 km long and takes roughly 2 hours to walk. With 45,000+ expected to be in the parade and close to half a million spectators this is hands down Scandinavia’s biggest Pride Parade.

Pride City

Pride City is a compiled list of all activities during Pride Week. This year they have invested more into Pride City with the hope to collect all of the city into pride-related activities all together under one umbrella. This is to highlight the events not well know for Pride visitors. Events will be popping up all around the city just.

Pride Park

This is where all shows and DJs will be performing throughout the week. Ruby Rose – mostly know for her role as Stella Carlin – from Orange Is The New Black will be djing at the Closing Party on Saturday the 30th.

Pride House

This week is about celebrating, but with recent events in Orlando it is also a good time to educate ourselves on how we can make the community stronger in the face of such evil. Pride House is the best place to educate your self from debates, culture, seminars, art, talks films, music, theater and more. It is located this year at the Kulturhuset Stadsteatern, Sergels Torg. The program has over 200 different items to choose from.

If you haven’t bought tickets for the festival, you still can through Tickster here. You can get more information about the events here as well.
