5 Must Haves For a Star Spangled 4th Of July!

by Cornelia

One of the biggest holidays in the United States of America is Independence Day or The 4th of July!

Here is a little history lesson for those of you not familiar.

In June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary war weighed in on a resolution to declare their independence from Great Britain. It was only a month later that the Declaration of Independence was adopted and written out by Thomas Jefferson. John adams claimed that celebrations should include, “Pomp and Parade…Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other.” It became a federal holiday back in 1941

Now lets jump a few years into the future for one of the most well-known American traditions – Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest. The event is held every year on the 4th of July at the flagship restaurant built in 1916. Thousands gather to see in Coney Island, New York.  This is a big year for them because they are celebrating their 100th Anniversary. Now I don’t know if this is exactly what Adams had in mind, but it is a sight to see. Over 60 hotdogs in less than 10 minutes sign us up!

Here is our list of must haves for a classic 4th of July! Happy Independence Day everyone!

They are a staple on the 4th of July. Surprisingly enough not every American has the right to set off fireworks. It is legal at a Federal level, but it is illegal in some states based on state law. The rest of the laws on fireworks varies from state to state, but its better to be safe than sorry! Here is a in-depth look at the laws on fireworks in the US.

A cheap and easy alternative to having loads of dangerous fireworks are the classic sparklers. These are mostly for kids to use, but they are a must have for any 4th of July celebration. They also look great on Instagram:

Yes, grilling at home with friends and family – without a doubt the must have for this occasion are burgers and hot dogs. How can you celebrate without them? These two things are as traditional as apple pie in the US.

Classic with an alternative twist is a veggie burger. Now veggie burgers nowadays aren’t that alternative with allergies, gluten free options, but why not making something homemade? Eating frozen when you are going for a healthy alternative doesn’t quite cut it. Here is a recipe for veggie burgers you can make on your own.

Black Bean Burger:

  • (16 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 green bell pepper, cut into 2 inch pieces
  • 1/2 onion, cut into wedges
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon Thai chili sauce or hot sauce
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs

Prep:15 Minutes

Cook: 20 Minutes

Ready: 35 minutes

You have already had your fair share of hot dogs and hamburgers and potato salad. But we can’t have an Independence Day BBQ without watermelon. Here you can see a fun way to show off that pride and enjoy the summer time delicacy – use a cookie cutter shaped like a star to cut out the watermelon slices, a dessert center piece everyone can appreciate. Below you can see a fruit filled American flag cake.

All of the desserts – cakes, fruits and candy – must fit the theme of red white and blue. We have seen these colors represented in many photos we found on Instagram.

Decorations and Clothing!

This is your chance to be as festive as possible. From an American flag t-shirt, socks, hat or bowtie – whatever has that red white and blue! Sometimes it is right in front of our faces and it’s just a matter of placing decorations together. Here we can see a simple flower arrangement with some festive candles and a flag table cloth.

This handsome fella right here looks like he is dressed to impress with that attire. He is destroying the competition on so many different levels. We salute you little guy.

America Playlist!

It’s all about enjoying this day to the fullest. Those of us lucky to be off for the day want to enjoy with family, great food and drinks. You can’t have a great get together with friends and family without some music. We recommend you build a playlist with party songs to get people dancing and having a good time. We can recommend some very American themed songs to add to your playlist.
